What is the Seder Meal?

A Seder is the traditional Passover meal that retells the story of the

Israelites’ exodus from Egypt through ritual, symbolic foods, and readings

from the Haggadah.

The Seder plate (ka’arah) holds the ceremonial foods, each with a specific meaning:

  • Matzah: Represents the haste of the Israelites’ departure from Egypt.
  • Maror (bitter herbs): Symbolizes the bitterness of slavery.
  • Charoset: A mixture of nuts, fruits, and wine representing the mortar used by the Israelites.
  • Karpas: Vegetables dipped in saltwater to recall tears.
  • Shank bone and egg: Represent the Paschal lamb and God's provision or mourning in the Temple.
